LOWELL, Mass. (Apr. 10, 2009) – Sophomore pitchers Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) and Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) gave up a combined four hits as C.W. Post defeated UMass Lowell, 6-0 and 6-0, Friday afternoon in a non-conference softball doubleheader at River View Field.
With the losses, UMass Lowell slipped to 4-23-1 entering Saturday's home twin bill against Stonehill. C.W. Post improved to 21-11 and visit Southern New Hampshire Saturday at 12:00.
In the opener, Berardi (10-5) allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five for the win. Junior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) batted 3-for-4 while freshman second baseman Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) batted 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Freshman pinch hitter Meagan Guy broke up Berardi's no-hit bid in the sixth inning when she beat out a single to shortstop.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the first inning when junior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) scored on an error and Kerry Fisher added an RBI single. C.W. Post added two more in the fourth behind an RBI double from junior leftfielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) and an RBI single from freshman catcher Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.).
Kerry Fished added a two-run single to highlight the seventh inning.
Sophomore pitcher Nicole Monroe took the loss as she slipped to 1-6, giving up five hits, four runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out two.
In the nightcap, Medina went 3 for 4 with two runs while senior first baseman Ashley Marchese (Patchogue, N.Y.) batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs to lead the Pioneers. Softy and senior designated player Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) each batted 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Freshman pitcher Elissa Boris, sophomore third baseman Hilary Hopkins and freshman first baseman Caelyn Ford each had hits for UMass Lowell.
Boris took the loss as she allowed 11 hits, six runs and no walks while striking out one to slip to 2-11. Kiser improved to 9-1 with the win as she yielded three hits and two walks while striking out eight.
Marchese broke a 0-0 drought in the third inning with a two-run shot to left center while Softy and Kulnis hit consecutive solo shots to centerfield for a 4-0 cushion in the fourth. Kerry Fisher and Katie Fisher highlighted the fifth with a sac fly and an RBI single, respectively.
The Pioneers will travel to Southern New Hampshire tomorrow at noon, weather permitting, to take on the Penmen in a doubleheader.
