CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (April 13, 2009) – Junior
Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) continued to swing a hot bat as she batted 5-for-8 and drove in five runs as C.W. Post swept past the University of Bridgeport, 6-3 and 7-0, Tuesday afternoon at Seaside Park.
C.W. Post improves to 25-11 overall and 9-1 in conference play. Bridgeport drops to 8-19 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
In the first game, Softy staked the Pioneers to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run to right field.
The Purple Knights got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when senior centerfielder Sydney DiGeorge homered to centerfield.
C.W. Post added its third run in the fourth when junior centerfielder
Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) singled to right field, scoring
Lindsey Trotto (Princeton, Mass.) from third.
The Pioneers got further help in the sixth inning when freshman second baseman
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) hit a three-run shot to right field.
Sophomore
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) went the distance and allowed just three hits while fanning 10 batters.
In the nightcap, Softy came through in the first with another two-run blast to right field. Softy delivered a one-run double in the fourth to put C.W. Post up 3-0.
In the fifth inning, junior leftfielder
Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) doubled to left centerfield and drove in Softy, who reached earlier on a walk. Senior third baseman
Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) drove in two runs with a single to centerfield and advanced to second on the throw. She came around to score later when freshman catcher
Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) singled to center.
Sophomore
Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) pitched through her sixth shutout of the season and allowed three hits while striking out seven batters.
