Home Runs Help Molloy Sweep Past No. 14 Softball; 5-4, 1-0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 23, 2009)
– Freshman third baseman Josette Cavallaro batted 5-for-6 to help propel Molloy College past 14th-ranked C.W. Post in an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
 
Molloy improves its overall record to 17-13 with a 7-7 mark in ECC action. C.W. Post falls to 28-14 overall and 12-4 in conference play.
 
Junior rightfielder Erin Rut helped stake the Lions to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when she singled to left field to score freshman leftfielder Meghan Karpinski from second.
 
The Pioneers answered in the bottom half of the second when senior third baseman Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) homered to left field that also scored junior leftfielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.).
 
Molloy tied the game up in the fourth when junior centerfielder Shannon Skeggs grounded out to second base and scored Cavallaro from third.
 
The Lions added three additional runs in the fifth that included a two-run home run from freshman first baseman Carla Campagna.
 
Freshman Allison Ryan earned the win, going the distance and scattering eight hits with three strikeouts and three issued walks.
 
Sophomore Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) was handed the loss after allowing five earned runs on nine hits through five innings. Freshman Hayley Choquette-Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) pitched two innings of relief for the Pioneers.
 
Cavallaro and Karpinski each tallied three hits and a run scored for Molloy. Junior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the Pioneers offensively, batting 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
 
In the nightcap, Cavallaro registered the game-winning run via a one-out home run to right center in the top of the fourth inning.
 
Sophomore Lauren Urbont pitched seven solid innings and allowed seven hits while fanning three batters for the shutout.
 
Sophomore Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) allowed one run on five hits while striking out eight batters for C.W. Post.
 
Cavallaro was 2-for-2 in the game for Molloy. Junior designated player Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) led the Pioneers, batting 3-for-3 at the plate. 
 
C.W. Post returns to action Saturday, April 25 when the Pioneers host New York Institute of Technology for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
