BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 25, 2009) –
Junior outfielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) went 2-for-3 in both ends of a doubleheader against New York Institute of Technology, helping C.W. Post to a split against the East Coast Conference rivals, dropping game one 5-1 but winning the nightcap 7-4.
Prior to the game, the team recognized their three seniors, Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.), Ashley Marchese (Patchogue, N.Y.) and Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.).
The Pioneers now stand at 29-15 and 12-5 overall, while NYIT moves to 33-20-1 and 10-4 in the conference.
The first game saw NYIT take a 1-0 lead in the third as Marissa Brucculeri scored on Brilynn Fields' single to left field.
The Bears pushed across four runs in the sixth capped by RBI hits by Anna Hernandez and Lisa Boystak.
C.W. Post tried for a comeback in the sixth as they loaded the bases with one out, but were able to score only one run as Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits, striking out seven.
Katie Fisher  led the Pioneers with two hits.
The nightcap saw The Pioneers jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first as Kulnis, Katie Fisher and Correia roped RBI singles.
But NYIT scored a run in the second as Brooklynn Fields homered to left center, and another three in the third as Brooklynn Fields struck again, this time for a three-run shot.
C.W. Post was quick to answer in the third as Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on Kulnis' single to left. Katie Fisher took the first pitch she saw and cranked it into the left field bleachers for a 7-4 Pioneer advantage.
Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) made the lead hold up as she improved to 13-3 on the year. She sophomore lefty allowed eight hits and four runs but struck out fourteen batters and issued just two walks.
Katie Fisher had two hits and four RBI, while scoring four runs. Kulnis added two hits and two runs and one RBI.
C.W. Post is back in action tomorrow as they look for a non-conference sweep of Georgian Court starting at noon on the softball field.
