BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 5, 2009) – Junior
Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) batted 3-for-7 with one RBI and three runs scored as the C.W. Post softball team split a doubleheader with Philadelphia University. The Rams scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh to win 1-0 while the Pioneer offense responded in the second game to win 8-0 in six innings Sunday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
C.W. Post improves to 16-10 on the season while Philadelphia improves to 12-13 overall.
It was as pitcher's duel in game one as both teams combined for five hits.
Philadelphia scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning when junior designated player Kristin Giamatteo reach base on an infield error and was pinch ran for by freshman Ali Glaser. Glaser later scored the game-winning run on a single to centerfield by freshman third baseman Danielle Parisi.
Freshman pitcher Ali Schmidt earned the win, pitching seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits with one walk and striking out nine Pioneer batters.
Sophomore
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) took the loss, allowing three hits and striking out four batters while walking one.
In game two, the Pioneers registered 14 hits in the game as junior leftfielder
Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) drove in three runs on two hits with a run scored.
C.W. Post put two runs across the plate in the bottom of the first. Freshman second baseman
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) tripled to right field to score senior first baseman
Ashley Marchese (Patchogue, N.Y.). Fisher came around to score in the next at-bat when Softy grounded out to the pitcher.
The Pioneers added two more runs in the third inning when Softy and
Katie Fisher hit back-to-back RBI doubles, cushioning the Pioneers' lead to 4-0.
Sophomore
Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) held the Rams hitless through four innings before surrendering the Rams' first hit of the game - a single to left field off the bat of second baseman Maggie Desmond. Kiser got out of the inning forcing the last two batters to pop up.
C.W. Post drove in three more runs in the fifth that was highlighted by a two-run single from
Katie Fisher.
Senior third baseman
Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) drove in the eight run to close out the game in the sixth with a two-out single up the middle to score Softy from third.
Kiser finished the game allowing four hits while striking out nine batters with no walks issued.
Kerry Fisher was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Katie Fisher went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Softy connected for three hits with three runs scored and an RBI.
For Philadelphia, four batters each had a hit in the game. Sophomore Kelly Rauco took the loss, pitching two and two thirds innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking one batter.
C.W. Post will play its next five meetings on the road, beginning with the University of New Haven on April 7 and will close out at the University of Bridgeport April 14.
