NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 7, 2009) –
The C.W. Post softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the University of New Haven Tuesday evening. The Pioneers took game 1 by a 2-0 score before the Chargers rallied to win the nightcap, 2-0.

In the first game, sophomore Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) went the distance, pitching seven quality innings and letting up just three hits while striking out one for the shutout.
Junior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) recorded the game-winning hit in the top of the first inning with a single to centerfield.

The Pioneers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when senior designated player Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) drilled a pitch over the fence in left centerfield.

Junior Brianne Gleason took the loss for the Chargers, allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out six batters and issuing one walk.

In game 2, Gleason led off the second inning with a home run to left center. The Chargers added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior designated player Jessica Medina hit an RBI single to centerfield.

The Pioneers threatened in the fifth inning when senior third baseman Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) led off with a single to right field. Freshman Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) pinch ran for Correia and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from freshman catcher Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.). Gleason pitched out of the jam, getting pinch hitter Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) to line out and junior centerfielder #Melissa Medina# (Levittown, N.Y.) to ground to end the inning.

Gleason earned the win, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and one walk for the shutout.
Sophomore Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) earned her first loss of the season, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out two batters and allowing one walk.
