NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (April 9, 2009) – Senior
Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) batted 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored as C.W. Post shut out Merrimack College, 7-0 and 10-0, in a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Warrior Field.
C.W. Post improves to 19-11 overall while Merrimack slips to 19-11.
In the first game, C.W. Post went ahead in the fourth inning when freshman second baseman
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) scored on an outfield error.
The Pioneer offense exploded in the seventh inning as they crossed home plate six times. Senior first baseman
Ashley Marchese (Patchogue, N.Y.) drove in the first run on a double down the right field line, scoring pinch runner
Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) from second base. Fisher followed up with an RBI single to left field that scored junior outfielder
Amanda Aiello (Charlton, Mass.) from third. Junior shortstop
Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) drove in Marchese and Fisher with a double to left center.
The inning continued as Kulnis and senior third baseman #
Megan Correia# (Seekonk, Mass.) each recorded RBI doubles to score the fifth and sixth runs.
Fisher batted 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored in the game.
Sophomore
Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) recorded her fifth shutout of the season, allowing only two hits while striking out four batters and issuing no walks.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers went ahead 2-0 in the first inning and later opened the seventh inning up with five runs.
The game's first run was scored on the help of a sacrifice fly from Fisher and an RBI single from Kulnis.
C.W. Post scored its third run in the third inning when freshman catcher
Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) singled down the left field line to score Kulnis, who came around from second. Kulnis later led off the fifth inning with a home run.
In the sixth inning, Aiello led off with a single up the middle and scored on a single from Fisher.
The Pioneers added five runs in the seventh that was highlighted by a three-run double from Marchese.
Kulnis completed the game batting 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Marchese batted 1-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore
Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) allowed just one hit for the shutout and struck out seven batters.
C.W. Post will play at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Friday at 3 p.m.
