No. 20 Softball Advances At ECC Championships With 3-1 Victory Over Adelphi

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (May 1, 2009)
– Sophomore Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) struck out nine batters as No. 20 C.W. Post defeated Adelphi University, 3-1, in the quarterfinal round of the East Coast Conference Softball Championships played Friday afternoon on the New York Institute of Technology softball complex.
C.W. Post improves to 32-16 overall and will play NYIT Saturday morning at 11 a.m. NYIT defeated Dowling College, 4-3, in the second contest of the day to advance to the winner's bracket.
Junior leftfielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) helped stake the Pioneers to a 1-0 lead with a double to centerfield that scored junior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.), who started the inning off with a single to leftfield.
C.W. Post tacked on another run in the inning with the help of a sacrifice fly from senior third baseman Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.), scoring junior designated player Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.), from third.
In the top of the fourth, Kulnis blasted an 0-1 offering over the left field bleachers for the game's third run.
Adelphi threatened in the bottom half of the seventh, beginning with a leadoff home run over the left field fence from senior first baseman Christina O'Hara (Deer Park, N.Y.) Kiser got the next two batters out on a ground out and strikeout before surrendering a two-out single from senior centerfielder Samantha Johnston (Port Jervis, N.Y.). Junior leftfielder Rochelle Noren (Langely, British Columbia) ended the game by popping out to the second baseman.
Kiser scattered six hits over seven innings to improve her record to 16-3. Sophomore Leighann Bell (East Islip, N.Y.) took the loss after surrendering three runs on seven hits with one strikeout.
Fisher went 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI while Kulnis was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Johnston led the Panthers with two hits.
