BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 9, 2009) – The C.W. Post softball team's postseason was cut short by a 2-0 loss to the University of New Haven in the fifth game of the NCAA Division II Softball East Regional Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 6-1, earlier in the afternoon.
New Haven improves to 34-17 overall and will look to take two wins from Georgian Court Sunday afternoon. C.W. Post ends its season with a final record of 34-18.
New Haven junior Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn.) earned the shutout and her 34th win of the season by scattering three hits over seven innings while striking out four batters.
Sophomore second baseman Courtney Garland (East Meadow, N.Y.) batted 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Garland put the go ahead run on the board in the top of the second with a home run to left field.
The Chargers' second run was scored in the top of the sixth when junior third baseman Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn.) scored from third base on a fielder's choice.
Sophomore Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) took the loss as she let up two runs on four hits and fanned seven batters.
Against Southern Connecticut, the Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by a two-run home run by junior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) and a two-run double from senior third baseman Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.).
Southern Connecticut put one run up in the top of the fourth when junior designated player Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) homered to right center.
The Pioneers scored two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth, beginning with a long home run to left center from junior right fielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.). Senior first baseman Ashley Marchese (Patchogue, N.Y.) doubled to left center to score freshman pinch runner Lindsey Trotto (Princeton, Mass.) from first base.
Sophomore Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) picked up her 18th win of the season. Kiser allowed one run on four hits and struck out six batters through seven innings.
