Pioneers Log Over 3,200 Community Service Hours In 2008-09
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (July 27, 2009) – C.W. Post student-athletes enjoyed much success this year on the field, on the court and in the pool, but when they weren't competing, the Pioneers were helping out in the community and totaled over 3,200 hours of community service during 2008-09.
Among the projects was the organizing of the Green Team Competition, an initiative that asked all athletes to recycle their mixed plastic and aluminum goods. The response proved to be overwhelming, as the University Facilities Department had to be called in to make a pick up due to overflowing bins. In a span of two weeks, the athletic department collected over 4,000 plastic water bottles, 300 cans and 15,000 aluminum flip tops.
In addition, the men's lacrosse program participated in a campus-wide clean up and helped build a house for Habitat for Humanity while the women's basketball team coordinated a fundraiser to raise awareness for tuberous sclerosis. The football team frequently made visits to St. Mary's Children's Hospital in Bayside during the school year.
In the fall, the women's lacrosse, softball and swim teams participated in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach.
Men's basketball supported “Cases for Kids” and collected new and gently used luggage for foster children. The team also visited children at the Shiners Hospital in Springfield, Mass. while playing at the NCAA Elite Eight tournament.
The Pioneers look to continue the strong tradition of assisting the community and surpass their record of service hours during the 2009-10 academic year.
