BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 20, 2010) – The 18th-ranked C.W. Post softball team closed out its weekend by taking two wins against American International College, 6-1 and 7-1, Saturday afternoon doubleheader at the Softball Complex. The Pioneers were led by senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.), who batted 4 for 5 with six RBI, including her 34th career home run.
C.W. Post improves its record to 9-3 overall while American International falls to 4-8.
Softy's home run came in the bottom half of the fifth inning following a single from freshman second baseman Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) to boost C.W. Post's lead to 6-1. The home run also tied the school record held by Jill Fisher since 2007.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with the help of RBI singles from Hardy and senior first baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) and an RBI groundout from senior right fielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.).
The Pioneers scored their fourth run in the bottom of the second when freshman designated player Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) came home on a wild pitch.
Senior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) was credited with her fourth win after striking out 10 batters and scattering six hits over seven innings and allowing one run.
Softy batted 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored while Hardy went 2 for 3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
In game two, C.W. Post put one run up in each of the first and third innings courtesy of RBI hits from Hardy and Softy.
The Yellow Jackets cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth when senior designated player Katie Elie (Worcester, Mass.) drove the run in on a sacrifice bunt, scoring sophomore left fielder Michele Niejadlik (Suffeld, Conn.) from third.
The Pioneer offense exploded for five runs in the fifth inning that was highlighted by RBI singles from Hardy, Softy and Katie Fisher and an RBI double from Kulnis.
Softy completed the game batting 2 for 2 with four RBI and a run scored while Hardy was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) earned her fourth win, pitching five innings and allowing one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Junior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) earned the save after closing out the last two innings with one hit and four strikeouts.
