Southern Connecticut Sweeps Past No. 18 Softball; 4-0, 5-4

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 23, 2010) – The No. 18 C.W. Post fell in a two-game sweep to Southern Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon at the Softball Complex. The Owls shut out the Pioneers in the first game, 4-0, before holding on the win the second game, 5-4.
Southern Connecticut improved to 10-4 overall with the win while C.W. Post slipped to 9-5.
Sophomore pitcher Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) pitched a one-hit shutout in the first game and struck out two batters with four walks issued.
The Owls scored their first run in the top of the first when sophomore leftfielder Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) singled down the left field line to score senior shortstop Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.).
The visitors added on to their lead in the fifth when Caporossi belted a two-run homer over the left field fence. The final run was scored in the sixth when freshman right fielder Brittany Bucko (Wallington, Conn.) hit an RBI single through the right side.
The Pioneers threatened with bases loaded in each of the second and fifth innings. The Owls got out the jam in the second with a strikeout followed by a force out at third base to end the inning. They ended the threat in the fifth with a force out followed by two pop ups to end the inning.
Senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) recorded the Pioneers' only hit in the game, a single to right center in the third.
Junior pitcher Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) was tagged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Junior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) pitched two and a third innings of relief and gave up one run on two hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Caporossi batted 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Owls.
Southern Connecticut took an early lead in the second game, scoring two runs in the first courtesy of RBI singles from Caporossi and senior pitcher Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.).
The Owls added their third run in the third inning when Bucko from third scored on a fielder's choice. The fourth run was scored in the fourth when senior centerfielder Julianne Flood (Poughquag, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to centerfield, scoring freshman second baseman Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) from second.
C.W. Post got two runs in the fourth when freshman designated player Linda Amarante (Cheshire, Conn.) grounded out to the shortstop to score freshman third baseman Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) from third. Sophomore left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, N.Y.) drove in the second run with an RBI single to right center to score senior right fielder Katie Fisher (Barto, N.Y.) from third.
In the seventh inning with bases loaded and two outs, sophomore Kim Kessel (Glen Cove, N.Y.) recorded a pinch hit RBI single to centerfield. Senior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double to left center that scored sophomore catcher Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) from third. Kessel was thrown out at third by the left fielder to end the game.
Sophomore Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) took the loss after pitching five and a third innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six batters. Berardi pitched finished out the game and gave up zero runs on three hits and one walk and struck out three batters.
C.W. Post is back in action on Thursday, March 25 when it hosts Queens College. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
