BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 1, 2010) – The C.W. Post softball team took two wins in a doubleheader sweep over Merrimack College, winning the first game, 7-2, before shutting out the Warriors, 6-0, in game two.
C.W. Post improves to 18-6 overall with the pair of wins while Merrimack falls to 4-9 on the season.
The first game saw the Warriors claim a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning after a two-run double to left center field from sophomore centerfielder Monique Gosselin (Lawrence, Mass.).
The Pioneers cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore right fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) doubled to right center to score senior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) from third. They tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth when right fielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) singled down the left field line to score sophomore second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.).
C.W. Post's bats exploded in the fourth inning as the host team put four runs across the plate on five hits, including an RBI double from Bright. The Pioneers added one more run in the bottom of the sixth when freshman designated player Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) singled to left field, scoring sophomore pinch runner Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) from third.
Junior pitcher Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) went the distance in the circle for the Pioneers and scattered six hits over seven innings while letting up two runs and striking out 12 batters.
Hardy batted 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored and Bright was 1 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored. Medina batted 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored.
Senior pitcher Atlee Cahill (Gloucester, Mass.) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits over six innings pitched.
In the second game, C.W. Post took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Hardy drove in two on a double down the left field line and senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to right field.
The Pioneers scratched out two more runs in the fifth courtesy of an RBI double from senior third baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) and an RBI single from Bright.
Medina came around to score the Pioneers' sixth run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
Junior pitcher Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) earned her first shutout of the season, letting up just three hits and an issued walk while striking out five in seven innings.
Medina led the Pioneers in hits, batting 4 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored. Softy was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday, April 3 when it travels next door to play New York Institute of Technology. The first pitched is scheduled for 12 p.m.
