No. 21 Softball Sweeps Past Dowling; 3-0, 5-4

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 10, 2010) –
The No. 21 C.W. Post softball team swept a doubleheader against conference leader Dowling College, defeating the Golden Lions 3-0 and 5-4 Saturday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
 
C.W. Post improves to 25-7 overall and 11-1 in the conference. Dowling suffered its first loss of the season and slips to 21-11 overall and 10-2 in the ECC.
 
C.W. Post took a 2-0 lead in the first game when sophomore second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) swatted a two-run homer over the right field fence. The Pioneers cushioned their lead with another run in the sixth when senior center fielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) came home on a passed ball.
 
Sophomore left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) and freshman designated player Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) led the offense with two hits each.
 
Junior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) earned her 11th win of the season, pitching a one-hit shutout and striking out 10 batters.
 
Junior Felicia Mendoza (Bloomington, Calif.) took the loss after surrendering three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out five batters.
 
In the second game, C.W. Post went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second after senior right fielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) launched a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence.
 
The lead didn't stick for long as the Golden Lions took a 3-1 lead after sophomore left fielder Deanna Tortorici (Levittown, N.Y.) blasted a three-run shot out to centerfield.
 
However the Pioneers came back in the bottom of the fifth with four runs as senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) knocked out a three-run homer and senior third baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) immediately followed with a solo shot to give the home team a 5-3 lead.
 
Junior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.), who came on in relief in the fifth inning and got the win. Sophomore Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) started the game in the circle for the Pioneers and let up one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Kiser pitched to three batters in the fourth  inning and gave up two runs on one hit.
 
Sophomore Jessie Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) took the loss for the Golden Lions, giving up five earned runs on four hits and three walks and striking out nine.
 
C.W. Post will play at the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday, April 13 at 3 p.m.
