FLUSHING, N.Y. (April 17, 2010) – The No. 18 C.W. Post softball team captured two conference wins and completed its regular season series with Queens College by sweeping the Knights, 8-0 and 8-4, Saturday afternoon on the Campus Field.
C.W. Post improves to 29-9 overall and 15-1 in the East Coast Conference. Queens drops to 13-22 overall and 9-9 in the ECC.
The teams played through three scoreless innings in game one before freshman second baseman Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) hit a one-out homer in the top of the fourth that also scored sophomore left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) to give C.W. Post a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers cushioned their lead in the sixth when senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) blasted a two-run homer. Senior first baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) followed with a solo in the next at bat. Sophomore designated player Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) drove in the inning's fourth run with a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore third baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) from third.
Bright helped further the cause when she hit a four-bagger that scored two runs in the seventh.
Junior pitcher Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) pitched her fifth shutout of the season and allowed three hits with three issued walks while striking out six batters.
Bright finished the game batting 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Hardy went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Softy batted 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and senior right fielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) was 3-for-4.
Junior Bryttne Nelson (Bonney Lake, Wash.) was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
In the second game, C.W. Post put together a six-run inning in the third that was powered by a two-run single from Hardy followed by a two-run homer to right field from Softy in the next at bat. Freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) added to the offense with a two-run double.
The Knights got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth when freshman second baseman Hillary Genova (Brentwood, N.Y.) reached on an RBI fielder's choice. The second run was scored when senior catcher Katie Miracco (Smithtown, N.Y.) singled to score the runner from third.
In the sixth inning, Softy continued to hit and drove in two with a double that scored Hardy and senior center fielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.)
The Knights scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh with an RBI single from junior shortstop Jill Rini (Staten Island, N.Y.) and a solo home run from Genova. After allowing a single with one out in the seventh, junior pitcher Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) retired the side with a strikeout and a ground out to end the game.
Softy completed the game batting 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Hardy batted 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and Medina was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Capella was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Kerry Fisher also had a good day going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Berardi went the distance in the circle for the win and allowed one earned run on six hits and four walks while striking out five batters.
Rini led the Knights with two hits in three at bats and drove in a run and came around once to score.
C.W. Post will close out the weekend hosting the University of Bridgeport on Sunday, April 18 beginning at 1 p.m.
