No. 18 Softball Splits With St. Thomas Aquinas

No. 18 C.W. Post played St. Thomas Aquinas to a 1-1 split Thursday afternoon in East Coast Conference softball action at Spartan Field. The Spartans rallied to score three runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Pioneers, 5-4, in the first game. The Pioneers won the second game, 14-5.
 
C.W. Post improves to 34-10 overall and St. Thomas Aquinas improves to 6-30 overall and 2-17 in conference play.
 
In the first game, the Spartans scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior left fielder Angela Squillini (Thiells, N.Y.) blasted a two-run home run.
 
The Pioneers responded in the next inning with four runs, including a three-run homer from senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) to lead 4-2.
 
The lead would not stick as the Spartans rallied in the bottom of the seventh with three runs, including the game-winning two-run double from Squillini.
 
The Pioneers registered eight hits in the game but stranded nine runners.
 
Squillini batted 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored. 
 
Freshman Maura Power (Pearl River, N.Y.) went the distance in the circle for STAC and allowed four runs on eight hits and five walks with one strikeout.
 
Junior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) was charged with the loss after letting up five runs on five hits with 13 strikeouts in six and a third innings pitched.
 
In the second game, the Pioneers got their revenge and scored 14 innings in the top of the third inning as seven batters recorded at least one RBI. Softy knocked out a two-run shot and senior first baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) added a three-run homer later in the inning.
 
The Spartans got to starter Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) for five runs on five hits and four walks but they could not match the Pioneers' offensive output.
 
Freshman second baseman Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Softy and Kulnis each had two hits, driving in three runs and two runs scored.
 
Freshman Samantha Welsh (Stony Point, N.Y.) was the losing pitcher after allowing 10 runs on seven hits and four walks with one strikeout.
 
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday, April 24 when its hosts Molloy College at 12 p.m.
