Softy Hits Three Long Balls As No. 18 Softball Turns Aside Molloy; 3-0, 3-2

BROOKVILLE N.Y. (April 24, 2010) – Senior shortstop
Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) hit three out of the park home runs, including a walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two as No. 18 C.W. Post swept past Molloy College, 3-0 and 3-2, in an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
C.W Post improves its overall record to 36-10 and 22-2 in the ECC, already eclipsing its win total of 34 wins from 2009. The losses drop Molloy to 33-13 overall and 16-6 in conference.
Prior to the start of the first game, the Pioneers honored their three graduating seniors: Softy, center fielder
Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) and right fielder
Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.)
In game one, the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when senior third baseman
Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) hit her 10 homer of the season to center field, scoring freshman second baseman
Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.), who reached base after getting hit by a pitch.
The home team added its third run in the bottom of the fifth when Softy connected on e home run to left field.
The Lions threatened in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on third and one out. But junior pitcher
Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) got out of the jam by striking out the final two batters of the inning.
Kulnis batted 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.
Kiser pitched her seventh shutout of the season to win her 17th game. She scattered five hits over seven innings with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
Freshman Kelley Jansen (Long Beach, N.Y.) was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
In game two, Molloy scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth when sophomore first baseman
Carla Campagna (Floral Park, N.Y.) led off with a solo shot to left field off of starter
Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia).
The Pioneers matched it with two runs in the bottom half of the inning Softy unleashed a two-run shot that cleared the left center bleachers.
The Lions tied the game in the top of the seventh when freshman third baseman Haley Calderwood (Lake Elsinore, N.Y.) reached base on an RBI fielder's choice with bases loaded after a throw to home plate for the force out from the infield did not reach in time.
The Pioneers could not push the winning run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh and the game went into the eighth with the score tied at 2-all.
Kiser, who came on in relief in the seventh, make quick work of the Lions with two strikeouts and a foul out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth and with one out, Softy came to the plate and with a 3-2 count, hit a rocketing shot that went well past the center field fence for the game-winning hit.
Jansen, who came on in relief of starter
Megan Butterworth (North Bellmore, N.Y.) in the fifth inning, took the loss. Jansen gave up one run on three hits and a walk. Butterworth allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Softy finished the game going 2-for3 at the plate and driving in all three Pioneer runs. Medina and sophomore left fielder
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Hardy batted 1-for-4 with a runs scored.
Bettles pitched five complete innings and allowed one run on four htis and four walks while striking out four batters.
Campagna led the Lions' bats with two hits, one RBI and a run scored.
C.W. Post returns to action on Tuesday, April 27 against Mercy College for a 3 p.m. ECC doubleheader.
