BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 27, 2010) – The No. 18 C.W. Post softball team swept a pair of conference wins from Mercy College, 12-4 and 10-0, Tuesday afternoon at the Softball Complex. Senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park,N.Y.) led the way with five hits and eight RBI, including a grand slam in the first game.
Both games were five innings in regulation by way of the mercy rule.
C.W. Post improves to 38-10 overall and 24-2 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy slips to 16-26 overall and 7-19 in conference play.
Sophomore pitcher Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) tossed a five-inning no-hit shutout in the second game with four walks and seven strikeouts to earn her 11th win of the season.
In the opener, the Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead when junior second baseman Paige Cauley (Stratford, N.J.) hit a two-out homer over the centerfield fence.
The Pioneers matched the run with one of their own in the bottom half of the first when Softy doubled to right center to score sophomore left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) from second base.
The home team added six more runs in the bottom of the second that included Softy's grand slam to lead 7-1. In the bottom of the third, freshman second baseman Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) added to the cause with an RBI single to left field before senior first baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) followed with a three-run homer to right field, giving the Pioneers an 11-0 lead.
Mercy added a run in the fourth with a home run to right field off the bat of junior centerfielder Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn.) and scored two more in the fifth with two fielder's choice RBI, making the score 11-4.
The Pioneers put the game-ending run across the plate in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore designated player Kim Kessel (Glen Cove, N.Y.) singled to left field to score senior right fielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.).
Softy batted 2-for-4 with five RBI and a run scored. Senior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Kulnis finished the game batting 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Junior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) got the win after pitching four complete innings and allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts. Junior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) came in the fifth to close out the game and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk.
Freshman pitcher Alex Oakes (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) was charged with the loss after allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits and three walks with one strikeout.
In the second game, the Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the first when Medina came home from second on a throwing error by the shortstop.
C.W. Post scored three more runs in the third when sophomore third baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) hit an RBI double to left field and Katie Fisher followed with a two-RBI single to left.
The Pioneers continued the scoring drive in the fourth when they plated six runs on six hits, including three-run shot to centerfield from Softy and RBI singles from both Fisher sisters and freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.).
Bettles made quick work of the Mavericks with two groundouts and a strikeout to end the game.
Softy finished the game batting 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Katie Fisher was also 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Kulnis and Medina each had two hits and two runs scored.
C.W. Post is back in action when it travels to play at Caldwell College on Wednesday, April 28 at 3 p.m.
