OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 3, 2010) – The C.W. Post softball team extended its win streak to seven with a pair of wins against next door neighbor, New York Institute of Technology, 4-1 and 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
C.W. Post improves its overall record to 20-6 and 6-0 in conference play while NYIT slips to 9-12 overall and 2-2 in the ECC.
During the first game, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior third baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score senior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) from third.
The Bears tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when junior designated player Patricia Memale (Oro Valley, Ariz.) ripped a double to left center to score senior third baseman Brooklyn Fields (Aurora, Colo.).
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth when the Pioneers put three more runs on the board as Medina hit an RBI single to the pitcher and sophomore left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) tripled to left field to score two.
The Bears posed no threat as they gave the Pioneer defense 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh to close out the game.
Junior pitcher Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) surrendered one run on seven hits and two walks and matched her career-high 14 strikeouts over seven innings.
Freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) went 3 for 4 at the plate with a run scored.
Sophomore pitcher Jamie Brooker (Callahan, Fla.) took the loss after giving up three earned runs on seven hits and three walks with eight strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers went ahead 2-0 in the first inning courtesy of an RBI double from Kulnis and a fielding error that scored senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) and sophomore second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) on the same play.
C.W. Post extended its lead to 4-0 in the third when Kulnis hit her second double of the game that scored Softy and freshman designated player Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.).
The Pioneers added two more runs in the sixth beginning when Bright scored from third on a fielding error by the shortstop with bases loaded. Two plays later, Fisher reach base on another fielding error and sophomore pinch runner Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) came in to score from third.
Junior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) came in to pitch the last four innings in relief for starter Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia), who pitched three shutout innings and let up one hit while striking out four. Berardi allowed no hits or runs and struck out three for the win.
Booker was credited with the loss after surrendering three earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
C.W. Post is back in action on Tuesday, April 6 when it hosts Molloy College at 3 p.m.
