Softy Breaks Home Run Record As Softball Splits With No. 20 Molloy

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 6, 2010) – Senior shortstop #Christie Softy# (Floral Park, N.Y.) set a new school record with 35 career home runs as C.W. Post defeated Molloy College, 4-2, in the first game on an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader. Molloy rebounded to take the second game, 7-4.
C.W. Post improves to 21-7 overall and 6-1 while Molloy improves to 21-7 and 6-2 in conference play.
Softy's home run broke the school record previously held by Jill Fisher since 2007.
Molloy took a 2-0 lead in the first game on account of a two-run homer off the bat of sophomore first baseman Carla Campagna (Floral Park, N.Y.).
The Pioneers were held scoreless through three innings until the fourth when Softy hit a one-out homer that cleared the left centerfield fence. Senior rightfielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) tied the game with an RBI double to left center.
C.W. Post took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when senior third baseman blasted a home run to left center. The Pioneers' fourth run was scored in the top of the seventh when senior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) singled to center and scored Fisher from third.
Junior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) picked up her ninth win of the season after pitching six innings and scattering five hits with two earned runs while striking out six batters. Junior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) came on in the seventh and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to earn the save.
Sophomore second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) led the Pioneers in hits, going 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored.
Freshman Kelley Jansen (Long Beach, N.Y.) took the loss after coming on in the fifth to relieve starter Megan Butterworth (North Bellmore, N.Y.) and allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
In game two, Molloy went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first when senior catcher Tiffany D'Alessandro (Wantagh, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to right field. The Lions tacked on another run in the third when freshman leftfielder Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) singled through the left side to score senior rightfielder Erin Rut (East Meadow, N.Y.) from third.
The Pioneers cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth when Kulnis hit an RBI single to left field that scored freshman designated player Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) from third. The Pioneers still had runners on second and third with one out before starter Jansen got of the jam with a strikeout and fly out.
The Lions broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth and scored five runs on three hits including a two-run homer from Campagna with two outs.
C.W. Post continued to battle in the game and made things interesting in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs with an RBI double from Fisher and an RBI single from freshman catcher Nicola Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) that cut the deficit to 7-4. The Pioneers almost tied the game up in the seventh with two outs when Kulnis came to the plate with two on and took a big cut that carried down the left field line before being ruled foul. Sophomore pitcher Allison Ryan (Seaford, N.Y.) got Kulnis to ground out to third to end the game.
Campagna was 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored for the Lions.
Jansen pitched five and two third innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Fisher finished the game batting 1 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Berardi took the loss after allowing three earned runs on 10 hits over four innings with five strikeouts.
C.W. Post returns to action on Thursday, April 8 when it travels to play at Mercy College for a 3 p.m. start.
