Softy Takes Down Another Record As No. 21 Softball Sweeps Past Mercy; 18-0, 9-0

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (April 8, 2010) –
Thirteen players recorded at least one hit as the No. 21 C.W. Post Pioneers dominated against Mercy College, sweeping the Mavericks 18-0 and 9-0, in East Coast Conference softball action Thursday afternoon at Mavericks Field.  Senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the offense going 5 for 9 at the plate and became the new leader at C.W. Post in career RBI with 174, breaking the record held by Trinette Cossa since 2001. 
The wins improve C.W. Post's season total to 23-7 overall and 9-1 in the conference while Mercy falls to 8-15 overall and 2-9 in ECC action.
Softy drove in five runs and crossed the plate four times. Her series highlights include a two-run single as part of a seven-run drive in the second inning of game one and a two-run home run in the top of the sixth of game two.
The Pioneers outhit the Mavericks 17-2 in the first game and led 9-0 after two innings of play. With a 2-0 lead to start the second inning, the Pioneers tacked on seven more runs that included two-run singles from Softy and sophomore second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) and an RBI single from freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.). Two more runs crossed the plate a throwing error and a bases-loaded walk.
The hits kept coming for the visitors and they scored another eight runs in the third inning on six hits and one error. Sophomore Lindsey Trotto (Princeton, Mass.) scored the inning's first run on a bases-loaded walk. Bright drove in two runs on the next at bat on a single. Sophomore Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) drove in another run with an RBI single and both Bright and senior right fielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) came around to score on an error by the shortstop. Sophomore Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) also hit an RBI single and freshman Linda Amarante (Cheshire, Conn.) scored the eighth run on a fielder's choice. 
Trotto recorded her second hit of the game in the fifth with she hit an RBI single.
Junior #Sarah Kiser# (Arnold, Md.) got her 10th win of the season after pitching a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts.
Junior pitcher Caitlin Rohme (Patchogue, N.Y.) took the loss after allowing eight earned runs on eight hits in two innings.
In the second game, C.W. Post scored early in the second inning when senior third baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) hit a two-run home run. The Pioneers put up four more runs in the fourth courtesy of RBI doubles from freshman designated player Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) and Softy. Two more runs were scored on an error charged to the center fielder.
In the fifth inning, Fisher hit her second home run of the season and Softy followed in the sixth with a two-run shot. 
Junior Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) was effective in the circle and pitched a four-hit shutout over six innings with eight strikeouts.
Junior pitcher Shanna Hicks (Marlboro, N.Y.) allowed five earned runs on 10 hits over five innings pitched for the Mavericks. 
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday when it hosts conference leader Dowling College (21-9, 10-0 ECC) at 12 p.m. on the Softball Complex.
