Heavy Molloy Offense Has Its Way With No. 24 Softball In 15-1 Win At NCAA East Regional

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (May 14, 2010) – The Molloy College Lion bats were hard at work as the Lions drove in 15 runs on 14 hits enroute to a 15-1 win over No. 24 C.W. Post in the opening game of the NCAA East Region tournament at Golden Lion Field hosted by Dowling College.
Molloy improves to 39-18 overall while C.W. Post slips to 40-15 overall. The Pioneers will take on Dominican College in the tournament's first elimination game at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Molloy will face Dowling at 1:30 p.m.
The Lions were led in hitting by sophomore first baseman
Carla Campagna (Floral Park, N.Y.), who led off the scoring in the first inning with a two-run home run and finished the game batting 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Freshman leftfielder Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) also hit well for the Lions with two RBI on two hits with two runs scored.
The Lions held a 2-0 lead in the first after Campagna's homer but the Pioneers cut the deficit with one run in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore left fielder
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.), who reached base with a single to right center, came home from third later in the inning on a wild pitch.
The Pioneers could not contain the Lions any further as they scored three more runs in the second and put the game further out of reach with eight runs in the third to lead 13-1. The Pioneer defense allowed six hits in the third and was charged with three errors.
The Lions added two more runs in the top of the fifth off an RBI single from senior catcher Tiffany D'Alessandro (Wantagh, N.Y.) and an RBI walk to junior pinch hitter Lauren Urbont (Long Beach, N.Y.).
Freshman
Megan Butterworth (North Bellmore, N.Y.) got the winning decision in the circle for the Lions after allowing one run on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Junior
Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) was charged with the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
Fisher led the Pioneers at the plate with two hits and a run scored.
