No. 20 Dowling Rallies To Defeat No. 24 Softball At NCAA East Regional, 8-1

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (May 15, 2010) – A six-run rally in the third inning opened up a 6-1 lead for No. 20 Dowling and the Golden Lions held on to defeat No. 24 C.W. Post, 8-1, and advance to play Molloy in the final day of the NCAA Division II Softball East Regional.
Dowling improves to 44-16 overall while C.W. Post ends its season with a 41-16 overall record.
The Pioneers took the first lead in the game when senior first baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) scored from third on a fielder's choice.
The Golden Lions responded by scoring six runs on seven hits with two errors in the third that was highlighted by four RBI singles from freshman shortstop Stephanie Tarango (Fontana, Calif.), senior right fielder Kristina DeMeo (Bay Shore, N.Y.), junior first baseman Kristen Weeks (Middle Island, N.Y.) and sophomore left fielder Deanna Tortorici (Levittown, N.Y.).
Dowling scored two more runs in the top of the fifth on an outfield fielding error.
Tortorici led the Golden Lions at the plate, batting 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Tarango was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Junior Felicia Mendoza (Bloomington, Calif.) got the win in the pitcher's circle and allowed one run on four hits and two walks with one strikeout.
Sophomore Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) was charged with the loss after allowing six unearned runs on five hits, one walk and striking out one.
Freshman second baseman Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.), sophomore left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.), Kulnis and freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) all recorded hits for the Pioneers.
