Softy Named ECC Player Of The Year; Six Pioneers Named All-Conference

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (May, 6, 2010) – Senior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) was voted the East Coast Conference Player of the Year by the league coaches. Softy, along with senior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) and junior pitcher Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) were named to the First Team.
Graduate first baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.), freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) and freshman second baseman Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) were named Second Team.
Dowling's Jessie Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) was selected Pitcher of the Year and Molloy's Haley Calderwood (Lake Elisnore, Calif.) was this year's Rookie of the Year. Molloy's head coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke was voted Coach of the Year.
 
Softy, a three-time Player of the Week selection, broke C.W. Post's career records in homeruns (48) and RBI (216). In 2010, she has compiled a .383 batting average to rank sixth in the ECC and lead the conference in slugging percentage (.766), homeruns (17) and runs batted in (67). Softy knocked out at least one home run in a stretch of seven games earlier this season. In her four-year career as a Pioneer, Softy has been named a NFCA First Team All-American, ECAC All-Star, a three-time All-Region selection as well as a four-time All-Conference First Team selection.
 
Medina currently leads the team in batting average (.438), hits (74) and runs scored (50). She broke the school's hits record and now has 292 hits over a span of four years. Medina is a four-time ECC First Team selection and NFCA All-Region selection.
 
Kiser has a 20-5 overall record this season, including a 13-2 mark in conference play. She has 230 strikeouts in 162.1 innings pitched and is holding batters to a .202 batting average. Kiser is a two-time ECC First Team selection and was also selected All-Region.
 
Kulnis has rebounded this season to post numbers similar to her freshman campaign. She is batting .352 with 51 hits, including 14 doubles and 11 homers to drive in 38 runs. She is a two-time ECC selection.
 
Capella, in her first season with the Pioneers, has posted solid numbers. She is batting .345 at the plate with 38 hits and 15 RBI. Behind the dish she has a .994 fielding percentage and has caught three base runners attempting to steal.
 
Hardy was named ECC Rookie of the Week twice this season and is second on the team in batting with a .384 batting average, driving in 31 runs on 56 hits, including 10 doubles and one home run, while coming around to score 38 times.
 
C.W. Post will play New York Institute of Technology in the opener of the East Coast Conference Championships held at Dowling College's Brookhaven Sports Complex today at 3:30 p.m.
