Pettersson and Niciforo Lead Women's Soccer Past Post University, 6-0
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2010) – Freshman forward
Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.) and junior forward
Sanna Pettersson (Orebro, Sweden) scored two goals apiece and added an assist as the C.W. Post women's soccer team rolled past Post University behind six unanswered goals, 6-0, in Rockville Centre's Dean Skelos Complex on Friday evening.
The game gave the Pioneers their first win of the season as they improve to 1-1-1 overall, while Post remains winless at 0-4.
C.W. Post wasted no time in getting on the board as Niciforo scored at 8:53 off an
Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden) assist as she took Babic's cross from the left and hit a one-timer into the back of the net.
Less than ten minutes later, Niciforo returned the favor as she assisted on Babic's goal, as Babic broke away down the middle of the field and juked the goalie, scoring into the wide open net for a 2-0 lead.
Niciforo struck again at 25:01, as she took a pass from senior midfielder
Danielle DeLuca (Islip, N.Y.) and sent a shot into the upper left corner from 15-yards out.
The Pioneers went through a bit of a scoring drought as they were held scoreless for the next twenty minutes, but sophomore midfielder
Sam Tavantzis (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) scored on a cross from Pettersson on the left side of the field and tipped the ball past the Post goalie for a 4-0 lead.
Pettersson scored the last two goals of the game, one at 73:13 on an assist from Janie Janitto (Hamden, Conn.) that Pettersson skipped through the hands of diving Post goalkeeper Michelle Chadwick. Pettersson rounded out the scoring with a beautiful shot into the upper left corner from 22-yards out.
Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) posted two saves to earn her first win of the year in shutout fashion. The Pioneers outshot Post 19-3 and held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Post starter Elizabeth Johnson made two saves in goal in the first half, giving way to Michelle Chadwick, who did not make a stop in the remaining 45 minutes.
The Pioneers continue action in the Molloy-hosted tournament in Rockville Centre, N.Y. as they take on West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m.
