ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2010) -
Seniors Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden) and Sanna Pettersson (Orebro, Sweden) each had a hand in two goals as the C.W. Post women's soccer team tacked up a 4-1 win over the host Molloy College Lions on Saturday afternoon. The second-most productive offensive output of the season came against the East Coast Conference schedule opening opponent as Babic scored the opening goal and Pettersson emerged with the game winner on a Babic helper.
With the 4-1 win over the Lions at Skelos Field, CWP improves to 3-1-2 (1-0 ECC), while Molloy goes to 1-4-1 (0-1 ECC).
Sparked by Babic's first-half penalty kick, that hit the back of the net at 23:26, C.W. Post got to the back of the net one more time in the first as Babic set up Pettersson on a through ball for a breakaway, and Pettersson finished by faking out Molloy keeper Tricia Zarro for a 2-0 lead.
In the 52nd minute, Molloy snapped its scoreless plaly as Kylie Barbosa scored on a header off a corner kick from the foot of Nicole Reverberi.
But the Pioneers responded in the 73rd minute to pad the Pioneer lead as Tove Eriksson (Helsingborg, Sweden) drilled home a corner kick into the top shelf of the goal. Twelve minutes later, Pettersson pushed a pass up for freshman Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.), who busted loose on the attack as she squared off against Zarro and slipped the ball though for the finish that ballooned the C.W. Post lead to 4-1.
That would be it for the scoring in the match, with CWP taking away a 4-1 victory. The Pioneers held a 16-6 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, and junior goalkeeper Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.) needed to make only three saves in posting the win, her second of the season.
Zarro made two stops in goal for the Lions.
C.W. Post takes a week-long break from competition as its next game is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25 against neighboring NYIT.
