Women's Soccer Ties Dowling 1-1 in 2OT, Golden Lions Advance in PK's

OAKDALE, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2011) – The women's soccer team battled through regulation and though two overtimes to remain tied with Dowling, but the second-seeded Golden Lions took down the third-seeded Pioneers in a shootout, advancing 4-3 over C.W. Post in East Coast Conference Championships action on Thursday evening.
Dowling moves to 12-5-2 and advances to Saturday's ECC Final, while the Pioneers end their season with a 9-5-2 record.
Rachel Nelson took a pass from Megan Emanuelo just four minutes into the contest and shot into the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers battled but were unable to score for the remainder of the first half, but evened the score early in the second half as they were awarded a free kick at the top of the box.
Tove Eriksson (Helsingborg, Sweden) curved a shot into the upper right corner for the equalizer.
The teams remained deadlocked throughout regulation and throughout two overtime periods, leading to the penalty kick round. Although the Pioneers took a an early 2-1 lead, the Golden Lions tied it a 3-3 and then put the clinching goal in following the sixth round of kicks for each team.
Junior goalkeeper
Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) made five stops in regulation, and Sara Sullivan made seven saves for the Golden Lions.
