Softball Splits the First Day Down at the Rebel Games, 7-2 and 3-4
KISSIMMEE, FLA. (March 13, 2011) – The C.W. Post Pioneers women softball team started off the year at the Rebel Games in Florida with a split in two games today. The Pioneer took the first game over Stonehill, 7-2, and then dropped a competitive game to Tiffin, 3-4.
After being tied 2-2 after three inning, the Pioneer bats broke out during the top of the fourth inning with four runs to take the lead for good. The Pioneers took advantage of four Stonehill errors during the inning to push those four runs across.
Freshman Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) got things going with an RBI single, with sophomore Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) coming through with a two RBI double next. Junior Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) tallied the final run of the game, sending a pitch over the outfield wall for the first homerun of the season.
Senior southpaw pitcher Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) scattered six hits and 10 strikeouts over seven innings, getting the complete game victory and giving the Pioneers a 1-0 start to the season with the 7-2 victory.
The Pioneers were quickly slowed down from the first game victory by Tiffin University in the immediately following second game. Tiffin got things going on the scoreboard with an RBI single during the first inning. Chamberlain turned the deficit into a tied game right away with a double to start off the bottom of the first that later turned into a run, with Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) singling to right and then advancing to second on a throw home that then allowed Chamberlain to come home with a throw to second to try and catch Fisher. Fisher then ended up at third after the scramble, with Chamberlain tying the game.
Fisher then gave the Pioneer the lead with a scoring run, as Nicole Hagenah's (Commack, N.Y.) groundball was enough for Fisher to come home from third. Fisher scored another run during the third inning as a bases loaded walk to Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) rotated the runners, giving Fisher her second scored run of the game.
A sacrifice fly during the fifth inning tied the game for Tiffin, with an en error later on allowing Torrie Terry to score for the Dragons, giving the squad the lead of 4-3.
Senior righty Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) struck out seven in her seven innings of work today; however took the loss during the game.
C.W. Post is back in action tomorrow in Kissimmee with an 11 a.m. first pitch against Caldwell, followed by a game set for 1 p.m. against Indianapolis.
