BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 2, 2011) – The C.W. Post women's soccer team, ranked 20th in the NSCAA preseason poll, was tagged with a season opening loss, falling in a tough 1-0 decision to the UMass Lowell River Hawks on Friday afternoon in the Bridgeport Soccer Classic.
Brittany Russo's goal came in the 69th minute, as the freshman peppered senior goalkeeper
Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.) with six shots on the day, five on goal.
The difference maker came after the Pioneer defense held firm despite an onslaught of shots by the River Hawks, with a 6-1 advantage in the first half and an 11-2 shot differential in the second stanza.
Weiser made eight stops on the afternoon to keep her team in contention, but the Pioneer offense struggled to get in sync, and only managed two shots, by freshman forward
Elsa Klarin (Lund, Sweden) and
Prudence Rydstrom (Islip, N.Y.)
C.W. Post has a chance to rebound with a win on Sunday, as it continues action in the Bridgeport Soccer Classic with a 3 p.m. matchup against American International, coming in a rematch of last season's NCAA matchup, won 2-0 by the Pioneers.
