No. 20 Women's Soccer Holds Off AIC, 2-1

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 4, 2011) – Sophomore forward
Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder
Heidi Eikeland (Kragero, Norway) each scored a goal, and the Pioneers held off a late rally by American International to earn a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon in the Bridgeport Soccer Classic.
The Pioneers earn their first win of 2011 and improve to 1-1, while AIC slips to 0-2 on the season.
Eikeland got C.W. Post on the board in the 15th minute, as she took a free kick struck by
Prudence Rydstrom (Islip, N.Y.) and converted for the 1-0 lead.
The teams played the rest of the first half and the first twenty minutes of the second stanza before either team scored again, as Niciforo scored following a defensive turnover by AIC at 67:57 to double the Pioneer lead.
Niciforo's goal would prove to be vital as AIC's bonnie Boornazian took a through ball from Angie Rassias and sent a shot into the lower right corner at 81:41.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Pioneers 14-6, but senior goalkeeper
Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.) was solid between the pipes, making seven saves to earn the victory. AIC keeper Samantha Tabak made three saves.
The Pioneers are off until next Sunday as they take on Pittsburgh-Johnstown at noon it the home opener for C.W. Post.
