Men Place 8th, Women Place 13th At Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic

ORLANDO, FLA. (Oct. 6, 2012) – Both the men's and women's cross country teams participated in the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic.  The men pulled out an eighth place team finish with senior Christian Altamura (Seaford, N.Y.) finishing the 8k 13th overall.  The women grabbed a 13th place team finish with freshman Elizabeth Stirling (Wantagh, N.Y.) leading the way by crossing the 5k line 16th overall.

Altamura led the Pioneer men with an overall 8k time of 26:45.11.  Fellow senior Thomas Speicher (Levittown, N.Y.) finished close behind with a time of 27:13.40, good for 18th place.  Ray Coyle (Woodhaven, N.Y.) finished off the trio of seniors that finished in the top 50 for the men.  He ran his 8k in a time of 28:17.31, crossing the line in 42nd place.

Sophomore Joseph Lasher (Seaford, N.Y.) and freshman Steven Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) rounded out the top five runners for the men.  Lasher crossed the line in 57th place with a time of 28:45.92, and Arnone followed not far behind with a time of 29:53.43, good for 89th place.

Stirling led the women to their 13th place finish with a time of 19:49.20.  Junior Jenn McLaughlin (Seaford, N.Y.) crossed the finish line in 54th place with a time of 20:50.40.  Senior Caitlin Smith (Levittown, N.Y.) and junior Angelica Price (Tampa, Fla.) finished within seconds of each other to grab 89th and 91st place, respectively.  Smith ran the course in 21:48.00, while Price finished with a time of 21:52.30.

Rounding out the top seven finishers for the women were junior Sara McLaughlin (Seaford, N.Y.), sophomore Shaylyn Stehl (Wantagh, N.Y.), and senior Katherine Wilkens (Woodbury, N.Y.).  Sara McLaughlin finished close behind Price, grabbing 106th place with a time of 22:15.30.  Stehl ran the 5k in a time of 22:24.20, good for 116th.  Wilkens was right behind with a time of 22:36.00, granting her 121st place.

The Pioneers will host the East Coast Conference Championships Sunday, Oct. 21 at their Brookville Campus.
