Fierro and Vistnes Garner ECC Weekly Accolades
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2012) – The East Coast Conference released its weekly awards and two LIU Post women's soccer players made the list, as senior goalkeeper
Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the third straight time and fourth overall this season, while freshman forward
Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) earned Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season after earning Offensive Player of the Week honors the previous two weeks.
Fierro made 11 saves and allowed only one goal (on a penalty kick) in two games last week. She played 200:00 minutes and posted a .917 save percentage and a minuscule 0.45 goals against average, along with a 2-0 record and one double overtime shutout.
Vistnes had a hand in all three goals against Bridgeport as the Pioneers came away with a 3-1 victory in a battle of the top two teams in the ECC. She scored two goals and added an assist for the No. 11 Pioneers.
The LIU Post Pioneers moved up to No. 11 in the NSCAA Top-25 poll, and remain in the No. 2 spot in the NSCAA East Region Poll as they posted two wins this week. The Pioneers needed double overtime to secure a 1-0 victory over Mercy, but
Hanna Westerling (Alvadalen, Sweden) provided the game winner against the Mavericks. In a matchup of the top two teams in the ECC, the Pioneers came away with a 3-1 victory over Bridgeport and maintain sole possession of first place in the ECC with a 10-1-1 record overall and a 6-0 slate in conference play. The trio of Westerling, Vistnes and
Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.) again provided the scoring damage as Westerling had three points (1 g, 1a), Niciforo had three (1 g, 1a) and Vistnes had five (2g, 1a). On the schedule this week is a non-conference matchup on Thursday against Wilmington starting at 3:30 p.m., followed by a road contest on Saturday at NYIT.
