Dowling Upsets No. 4 Women's Soccer in ECC Semifinals
Box Score BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2012) – Dowling College scored two first half goals and held on for a 2-1 win Friday afternoon at Golden Lions Field to advance to the East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship Final.
Dowling improves its overall record to 12-3-2 and will play the University of Bridgeport on Sunday at noon for the championship at Bridgeport's field. LIU Post falls to 15-2-2 and will wait for seedings for the upcoming NCAA tournament, which will be announced Monday evening.
The Golden Lions scored their first goal in the 17th minute when Alexandria Abruzzo controlled a pass off a penalty corner from Alexis Parrotta and headed it into the left post. Dowling added to its lead in the 39th minute on a goal from Lindsey Thompson after she broke through the defense and drove in a shot from 15 yards out into the right corner.
The Pioneers gained some momentum back in the second half when freshman
Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) brought the ball down on a free kick, controlled it and shot it into the lower left corner.
Dowling's defense was able to keep the Pioneers from getting off another solid shot near the goal in the final minutes of play to seal the win.
Dowling outshot LIU Post by a 19-10 count and held a 3-1 advantage on corners.
Senior
Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) made six saves in goal for the Pioneers. Melissa Guglielmo made three stops in goal to preserve the win.
