Softball Announces 2013 Captains
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (November 19, 2012) - Three captains have been selected to lead the 2013 LIU Post softball team, head coach
Jamie Apicella announced today. Senior
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) and juniors
Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) and
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) were elected team captains by their teammates.
"This fall, Kaci, Nicole and Carly have proven to their teammates that they are our leaders both on and off the field. I couldn't be any happier with the decision to name these three young ladies our captains. They are unselfish, passionate, determined, and competitive athletes who lead by example day in and day out," said Apicella. “They are natural leaders who understand the commitment it takes to play softball at the highest level and are eager to help guide the Pioneers to a successful season. I know these young ladies are emotionally invested in LIU Post and the softball program and will do whatever it takes to exemplify "Post Pride".
Hopkins, a two-year captain for the Pioneers, is a three-year starter at first base who will look to cap her career with the same consistency she has shown throughout her time in green and gold. Playing in every game last season and batting in the two-hole, Hopkins hit .290 and scored 18 runs while anchoring the infield with a .981 fielding percentage.
Hagenah is a two-time NFCA All-American who has already established herself as one of the premiere players in the region, and will add a leadership role to her game this season. After moving from third base to shortstop last season, Hagenah made the transition seamlessly with a .940 fielding percentage, and continued her offensive dominance with a .371 average at the plate, complete with 11 home runs and 48 RBI.
Chamberlain is a team-first player who looks to provide guidance to a young outfield unit this season. An All-Conference selection in her rookie season, she has the ability to be a table-setter in the lineup and will continue her solid outfield play while leading by example with a solid work ethic.
The Pioneers open the 2013 season when they travel to Kissimmee, Fla., for the Rebel Games March 10-16.
