Women's Basketball Downs Pace, 53-43

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2012) - The LIU Post women's basketball team secured a 53-43 victory over Pace University Saturday afternoon in the Pratt Recreation Center. This marks the first LIU Post win over Pace since the Pioneers opened up their 2003-04 season on Nov. 15 with a 60-58 win over the Setters.
LIU Post improves to 5-1 (1-1 ECC), while Pace slips to 5-3 (4-2 NE-10).
Sophomore
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) led the Pioneer offense with 11 points including 4-5 from the free throw line. Junior
Shayna Gatling (Baldwin, N.Y.) provided a spark off the bench, chipping in nine points, while senior
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) added nine points of her own along with seven rebounds and four blocks. Junior
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) grabbed a Pioneer-high nine boards.
The Setters' Margo Hackett registered a game-high 12 points.
The game proved to be a rough shooting day as the Pioneers shot just .286 (18-63) from field-goal range, .261 (6-23) from beyond the arc and .688 (11-16) from the charity stripe in the win. Pace shot .373 from field goal range, .222 from downtown, and .600 from the free throw line.
The Setters jumped out to an early start, scoring seven unanswered points causing Coach
Dierdre Moore to go to her bench early. With all five of their starters pulled after just two minutes of play, the Pioneers' received some energy from the bench players. Gatling scored the first five points for the Pioneers. With the score at 12-5 in favor of Pace and 10:37 left in the half, Moore put her starters back in. Just a few minutes later the Pioneers were able to grab their first lead of the game (16-14) off a trey by Williams. At the closing of the half, the scoreboard read 26-18 in favor of the Pioneers.
Pace opened up the second half on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 28-all with 15 minutes left in the game. The Pioneers countered with a 12-2 run of their own for their first double-digit lead of the game. They never looked back securing the 10 point victory by a score of 53-43.
The Pioneers will next hit the road as they travel to No. 2 Bentley University Sunday, Dec. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
