BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 18, 2012) – The C.W. Post Pioneers swept a doubleheader against American International, 7-6 and 2-1, in non-conference softball action Sunday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
C.W. Post evens its record at 8-8 overall while American International's dips to 4-6.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a two-run shot from designated player Stephanie Belanger.
The Pioneers cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second when freshman catcher
Alyson Dzierzynski singled to right field that scored senior second baseman
Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) from second, who had reached on a single and advanced on a passed ball.
The Yellow Jackets responded with four runs in the top of the third that included a two-run home run from center fielder Ashleigh Peter to lead 6-1.
C.W. Post scored one run in the bottom half of the inning when senior right fielder
Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) scored from third on a fielding error. In the fifth, sophomore shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) tied the game up with a swing of her bat as she launched her third career grand slam over the fence in left center.
C.W. Post rallied for one more run in the seventh when Hagenah scored from third on a fielder's choice.
Senior
Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) got the win after pitching four innings of relief and scattering two hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Sophomore
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) pitched three innings and allowed five runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
AIC's Bethany Grimes took the loss after allowing five runs on 13 hits with two strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers scored a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to lead 2-0. The first run was scored on a home run from Dzierzynski to left center - her first career home run. The second run came around on an RBI double from Hagenah.
The Yellow Jackets made waves in the seventh when Belanger hit her second home run of the day off freshman
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.). Salcido got out of the jam with two ground outs to end the game.
Freshman center fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) and junior first baseman
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.Y.) each batted 2-for-3 in the game.
Salcido allowed four hits while striking out four batters for the win.
Erin Glikes was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two.
C.W. Post returns to action on Tuesday, March 20 in its East Coast Conference opener against Queens College at 2:30 p.m.
