Offense Powers Softball Past Queens (N.Y.), 3-1 and 12-1

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 20
, 2012) – The C.W. Post softball team swept a doubleheader from Queens College, 3-1 and 12-1, in the East Coast Conference opener Tuesday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
 
C.W. Post improves to 10-8 overall and 2-0 in conference action while Queens dips to 7-3 and 0-2.
 
The Knights grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one when right fielder Monique Roberge drove a 0-1 pitch over the wall in left center.
 
The Pioneers responded in the bottom half of the inning when freshman catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) blasted her third home run of the season well past the left field wall.
 
C.W. Post scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth when senior right fielder Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) tripled to left center that scored freshman center fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) from second.  The Pioneers added an insurance run in the next at-bat when sophomore third baseman Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) singled down the right field line to score Palazzo.
 
Sophomore Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) pitched seven innings and allowed one run on two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts for her fourth win of the season.
 
Palazzo and Dzierzynski each batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Pioneers.
 
Queens' pitcher Isabelle Yaroch took the loss after giving up eight hits and three runs through six innings.
 
The Pioneer bats continued to heat up in the second game as the hosts outhit their opponent, 15-1.
 
C.W. Post scored four runs in each of the first and second innings.  Gonzalez drove in the first run with an RBI double to right center that was followed by an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.).  Dzierzynski drove in her second run of the day with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Gonzalez.  Weber came to the plate and hit an RBI single to center field that scored the final run of the inning.
 
In the second inning, Hagenah hit an RBI single to right field that scored Havens from to third.  Dzierzynski reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Palazzo, who had reached with an outfield single, to score from third.  Gonzalez came on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of Weber.  Hagenah scored the fourth run on an infield throwing error.
 
The Pioneers boosted their lead to 9-0 in the third when Gonzalez doubled down the right field line that scored Havens, who had reached with an infield single. 
 
Queens broke through with a run in the fourth when first baseman Carla Pennolino grounded out to shortstop to score center fielder Melissa Natale from third.
 
C.W. Post added three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth, beginning with a leadoff home run to left field from Hagenah.  Senior left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) furthered the cause with a loop single to left center later in the inning that plated two more runs.
 
Freshman pitcher Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) allowed just one run on one hit with one strikeout to earn her fourth win of the season.
 
Havens, Gonzalez and Hagenah each batted 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Pioneers.  Havens extended her current hitting streak to seven games.
 
Nicole Turato took the loss after allowing 12 runs on 15 hits in four innings pitched.
 
C.W. Post returns to action on Thursday, March 22 away against Adelphi at 2:30 p.m.
