GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (March 22
, 2012) – A steady dose of solid hitting powered the C.W. Post softball team to a pair of wins against cross town rival, Adelphi University, 11-1 and 6-4, Thursday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Janet L. Ficke Field.
 
C.W. Post improves to 12-8 overall while Adelphi dips to 10-7-1.
 
Sophomore shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) led the Pioneers at the plate, going 3-for-6 that included two home runs in the second game.
 
In game one, C.W. Post jumped out to a 4-0 lead on three hits and an error.  Freshman centerfielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) scored the first run on a wild pitch.  Sophomore third baseman Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.)  touched the plate on a bases-loaded walk followed by an RBI single from senior second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.).  Sophomore pitcher Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) scored the fourth run on an RBI walk given to senior left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.).
 
The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the second on a two-run homer from freshman catcher Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) to left center to lead 6-0.
 
C.W. Post boosted its lead to 11-0 with five additional runs in the fourth courtesy of RBI singles from Weber and Fisher along with a bases-loaded walk issued to Bright.
 
Adelphi got on the board in the fourth when third baseman Victoria Wink roped an RBI double to left center.
 
Weber earned her fifth win of the season in the pitcher's circle and scattered six hits and four walks with one run and four strikeouts over five innings.
 
Dzierzynski went 1-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored.  Weber was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.  Bright batted 1-for-2 with two RBI while Fisher was 1-for-2 with three RBI.
 
Lauren Watts was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits and four walks in two thirds of an inning pitched.  Katie Andrews came in relief and allowed seven earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two.
 
In the nightcap, the Pioneers wasted no time as they took an early 3-0 lead after Hagenah blasted a home run to center field.
 
The Panthers answered with a run in the bottom half of the second after Amy Ogden scored on a passed ball. 
 
C.W. Post increased its lead to 5-1 with two runs in the fifth, beginning with a sacrifice fly to center from Dzierzynski followed a run scored on an infield error.
 
Adelphi cut the lead down with a pair of runs in the fifth, first when designated player Katie Andrews was hit by a pitch and another run on a bases-loaded walk issued to catcher Meghan Heiser.
 
Hagenah gave the Pioneers some breathing room in the top of the seventh when she hit her second home run of the game over the wall in left center.
 
The Panthers threatened again in the seventh as Heiser drove in one run with an RBI single down the left field line.  Senior Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia), who came on in relief of starter Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) in the fifth, got out of a bases-loaded situation by striking out center fielder Emily Dorko to end the game.
 
Salcido earned her fifth win of the season after pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits and five walks while striking out one.  Bettles picked up the save after pitching three innings and allowing one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
 
Kelly Devon was charged with the loss after allowing five earned runs on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout.
 
Hagenah was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.  Havens batted 2-for-3 with a run scored and Fisher was 1-for-3 at the plate.
 
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday, March 24 in an NCAA regional final rematch against Merrimack.  First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Softball Complex.
