DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (March 27, 2012) – C.W. Post swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader from Mercy College, 12-1 and 6-2, Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field. The pair of wins totaled 1,001 victories in the history of the Pioneer program and also gave head coach
Jamie Apicella his 523rd career win at C.W. Post.
C.W. Post's overall record improves to 16-10 with a 4-0 mark in conference play. Mercy's record slips to 12-11 overall and 2-4 in the ECC.
The Pioneers scored in every inning of their five-inning contest against the Mavericks in game one. Sophomore shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) drove in the first run in the first inning on a single up the middle that scored senior right fielder
Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.). Freshman catcher
Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) followed with a three-run shot to left field to put the Pioneers up 4-0.
In the second inning, freshman centerfielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to score freshman
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) from third. Palazzo followed with an RBI single to second base to score Havens and came home on an infield groundout from sophomore third baseman
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.).
The Mavericks got one run back in the bottom of the second when left fielder Courtney Butler slapped an infield single to score first baseman Kelly Bentson from third.
The Pioneers pushed their lead to 9-0 in the third courtesy of a two RBI single to right field from
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.).
Senior first baseman
Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the fourth that scored Hagenah, who reached on a walk. Dzierzynski scored the second run of the inning on an infield error.
C.W. Post added one more run in the top of the fifth when Gonzalez singled to right field to score sophomore
Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) from third.
Dzierzynski finished the game batting 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run while Palazzo was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) picked up her seventh win of the season three innings pitched with three hits and one run given up. Senior
Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) pitched the final two innings scoreless with no hits and one strikeout.
Mary Sieber took the loss for the Mavericks after allowing six earned runs on seven hits through an inning and a third.
In the second game, the teams played through three scoreless innings before the Pioneers put two runs on the board in the top of the fourth courtesy of RBI singles from senior second baseman
Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) and Fisher.
Mercy tied the game in the bottom of the fourth one a two-run home run off the bat of center fielder Jenna Ausiello.
The Pioneers responded with four runs in the fifth that included a two-run single from Weber, who advanced to second on an error by the right fielder. Dzierzynski also came around to score on the error.
Freshman
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) went the distance for the win and scattered six hits and two earned runs over seven innings.
C.W. Post returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Dowling College at 3 p.m.
