Softball Splits With Dowling; Hagenah Knocks Out 3 HR's

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 29, 2012) – Sophomore shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) went 4-for-6 with seven RBI, including three homers, against Dowling College on Thursday afternoon.  The Golden Lions prevailed, 9-7, in eight innings in the first game while the Pioneers rallied to take game two, 10-2, in five innings in East Coast Conference softball action at the Softball Complex.
 
C.W. Post improves to 17-11 overall and 5-1 in conference play while Dowling improves to 11-10 and 6-4 in conference play.
 
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when freshman center fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) scored on an infield throwing error.
 
The Golden Lions took the lead in the top of the second when left fielder Crystal Tarango doubled to right field to score two.
 
C.W. Post responded with two in the bottom of the third when Hagenah launched her first home run of the day to left field that also scored senior right fielder Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.), who was hit by a pitch.
 
Senior pitcher Jessie Stavola tied the game up at 3-3 with a lead-off, first pitch home run that cleared the left field fence in the third inning.  The Golden Lions opened the game up with three runs in the sixth, beginning with a run that was scored on a charged balk.  Two more runs came in on an RBI single from shortstop Stephanie Tarango to give Dowling a 6-3 advantage.
 
Dowling added one more run in the top of the seventh in hopes of putting the game out of reach for the Pioneers on an RBI single from Crystal Tarango.
 
C.W. Post's offense rallied to tie the game up, beginning with a three-run home run from sophomore third baseman Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) to right center, followed immediately by Hagenah, who blasted a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence.
 
With the game stretching into the eighth inning, Dowling went ahead 9-7 as second baseman Erica Fischetti hit a two-out single to center field that secured the win for the Golden Lions.
 
Tarango batted 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored for Dowling.  Stavola completed the game with 10 strikeouts and allowed six earned runs on eight hits and one walk.
 
Hagenah was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Senior Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) was charged with the loss after allowing two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts.  Sophomore Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.), who started the game and went three and a third innings, gave up one earned run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
 
In the second game, the Pioneer bats continued to heat up.  In the first inning, freshman catcher Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) hit her fifth home run of the season with a three-run shot to left field.
 
C.W. Post added two more in the third on a two-run opposite field shot to right field from Hagenah to lead 5-0.
 
Dowling sized the lead down to 5-2 as Stephanie Tarango and catcher Emily Slack hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the fourth.
 
C.W. Post responded with three more in the bottom half of the inning as Hagenah delivered two more runs with a two-RBI double and Dzierzynski added an RBI single.
 
With an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, senior first baseman Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) led off with a double to left center.  Senior right fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) reached base two batters later with a single to left center.  Both runners ended up scoring the game's final runs on a passed ball to end the game.
 
Hagenah was 2-for-2 with four RBI and three runs scored while Dzierzynski went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored.
 
Freshman Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) got the win in the circle after pitching five solid innings and surrendered two runs on five hits and a walk while fanning three batters.
 
Stavola was charged with the loss in the game after allowing three runs on three hits and a walk.
 
C.W. Post is back in action on Saturday when it travels for an ECC match up at the University of Bridgeport at 12 p.m.
