No. 12 Softball Starts Off 2012 Season At 2-0

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 4, 2012) – The 12th-ranked C.W. Post softball team opened the 2012 season with victories against St. Cloud State (6-5) and Ferris State (2-0) Sunday afternoon at the Fortune Road Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. as part of the Rebel Spring Games.
In game one, St. Cloud took a 4-0 lead after scoring two runs in each of the third and fourth innings that included a two-run home run in the third and a two RBI double in the fourth.
C.W. Post answered back in the bottom half of the fourth with four runs to tie the game. Senior centerfielder
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) drove in three with a double to left center and scored on a single to left field from senior catcher
Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.).
The Pioneers added two more in the fifth as sophomore third baseman
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) led off with a single to left field and moved to third on a double from sophomore shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.). Gonzalez scored the first run on a wild pitch while Hagenah came around on an error by the third baseman that also allowed Fisher to reach first base.
The Huskies rallied for one more run in the sixth on a fielding error that allowed Kelly Olson, who reached on a double to right field, to score from third.
Fisher was 1-3 with four RBI and a run scored. Hagenah went 2-3 with two runs scored while Gonzalez was 1-2 with two runs.
Sophomore
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) came into the game in the fifth to pitch relief and struck out two while issuing two walks and allowing four hits to earn the win. Freshman
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) pitched the first four innings and allowed four runs on four hits while fanning six batters and issuing four walks.
St. Cloud's Kelly Franks took the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits and five walks while striking out five.
In the nightcap, both teams played through four scoreless innings before the Pioneers put a run on the board in the top half of the fifth when sophomore pinch hitter
Angela Carmine (Westbury, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line to score freshman
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) from second.
C.W. Post added one more run in the seventh when Weber laced a double to left center that scored sophomore
Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) from second.
Senior
Hayley Bettles (Vancouver, British Columbia) pitched a complete shutout and scattered six hits and three walks over seven innings.
Ferris State's Dana Bowler was charged with the loss after allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out five.
C.W. Post is back in action on Monday when it plays two, beginning with Minnesota State-Mankato at 1 p.m. and finishing with Saginaw Valley at 3 p.m. The match against Saginaw Valley will serve as a rematch from the 2011 College World Series, where the Pioneers were edged by the Cardinals, 2-0, in the elimination game.
