Softball Takes Two From Queens, 8-0 and 5-0

FLUSHING, N.Y. (April 1, 2012) – C.W. Post swept a doubleheader from Queens College, 8-0 and 5-0, Sunday afternoon in East Coast Conference softball action.  The wins helped the Pioneers complete a regular season series sweep over the Knights after defeating them earlier this season, 3-1 and 12-1.
 
C.W. Post improves its overall record to 19-11 overall and 7-1 in the ECC.  Queens falls to 11-8 and 4-7 in conference action.
 
The Pioneers made quick work in the first game, scoring eight runs through six innings to win via mercy rule. 
 
Freshman catcher Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning when she came home on a wild pitch.
 
The Pioneers scored three runs in the fourth, beginning with a fielder's choice for Dzierzynski that scored sophomore third baseman Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.), who had reached on a leadoff walk.  Dzierzynski came around to score on an outfield fielding error that also allowed sophomore pitcher Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) to reach and advance to third.  Weber scored the third run on a single from junior first baseman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.Y.).
 
C.W. Post added three more runs in the fifth, beginning with an RBI triple from senior right fielder Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) that scored freshman center fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.).  Gonzalez followed with an RBI double to bring home Palazzo.  Hopkins drove in the final run of the inning with a single back to the pitcher to score sophomore shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.), who reached base on an infield fielding error.
 
The Pioneers put the final run on the board in the sixth when Gonzalez singled through the left side to score senior left fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.), who led off with a single to center  field.
 
Gonzalez batted 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.  Hopkins was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
 
Weber completed the shutout and scattered six hits with a walk while striking out six batters.
 
Isabelle Yaroch took the loss after giving up four earned runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning four batters.
 
In the night cap, both teams were scoreless until the top of the fifth when C.W. Post erupted for five runs, starting with a leadoff home run to center field from Gonzalez.  Hagenah followed with a double to right field later scored on a single up the middle from Dzierzynski.  Fisher came to the plate and brought in two runs with a single to left field to score Dzierzynski and Weber.  Fisher scored the final run when Palazzo singled to the second baseman.
 
Fisher led the team with two hits and two RBI.  Freshman Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) went the distance and allowed three hits and three walks while striking out three.
 
Turato was charged with the loss after allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks through three innings pitched.  Yaroch came in and pitched the final four innings, letting up three runs on seven hits and two walks.
 
C.W. Post returns to action on Tuesday, April 3 when it hosts St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
