Caldwell Takes Two From Softball, 6-5 And 11-3

CALDWELL, N.J. (April 18, 2012) – C.W. Post lost a mid-week non-conference doubleheader against Caldwell College by scores of 6-5 and 11-3 Wednesday afternoon at Caldwell Field.
Caldwell improves its overall record to 35-10 while C.W. Post falls to 33-17.
The Pioneers spotted themselves a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when sophomore third baseman
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) hit her ninth home run of the season over the wall in center field.
Caldwell answered with one run in the fourth when shortstop Megan Fryday hit an RBI groundout that scored Jacklyn Bates from third.
C.W. Post regained the lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from senior left fielder
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) that scored junior first baseman
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.Y.) from second.
The Cougars tied the game up again in the bottom half of the inning when center fielder Kristen Knorr singled up the middle to score third baseman Sara Zambelli from second.
In the top of the seventh, the Pioneers looked to close the door on the Cougars as Gonzalez blasted a three-run shot to the opposite field in right to take a 5-2 lead.
Caldwell refused to go away quietly and instead rallied to score three runs on RBI singles from Knorr and catcher Alyssa Calderon to swipe a 6-5 win away from the Pioneers.
Knorr finished the game batting 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Calderon batted 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Kourtney Wilson went the distance for her 16th win of the season, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
Gonzalez finished the game batting 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Fisher batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Senior
Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) started the game and went five and third innings and scattered two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five.
In the second game, the Pioneers scored two runs in the first on RBI singles from Gonzalez and Weber.
Caldwell scored a run in the first and second on an RBI single from first baseman Briana Gaspich and a wild pitch. The Cougars' offense exploded in the third and scored nine runs on seven hits and two errors that were highlighted by a two-run homer from Gaspich as well as two-RBI singles from second baseman Dia Cascone and Calderon.
The Pioneers scored one more run in the fifth on an RBI single from freshman catcher
Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) before the Cougar defense ended the game by forcing an out at third with bases loaded to end the game.
Gaspich went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored for the Cougars. Calderon batted 2-for-3 with two RBI while Cascone went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Hanna Walkinshaw earned her ninth win after pitching five innings and allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk with one strikeout.
Fisher led the Pioneers with two hits and a run scored. Gonzalez batted 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) lost the decision after allowing six earned runs on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout.
C.W. Post returns to action on Friday when it hosts Molloy College at 3 p.m.
