Softball Splits ECC Doubleheader With Molloy

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 20, 2012) – The C.W. Post Pioneers captured a 12-4 win in six innings over Molloy College in the first game of an East Coast Conference doubleheader but could not complete the sweep as the Lions held on for a 1-0 victory in game two Friday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
C.W. Post improves to 34-18 overall and 22-4 in conference play while Molloy improves to 38-9 overall and 24-2 in the ECC.
The Pioneers scored 12 runs on 12 hits in the first game, beginning in the second inning when they put four runs up. Sophomore pitcher
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) and senior designated player
Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) drove in the first two with RBI doubles and junior first baseman
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) cleaned up with a two-run homer to left field.
The Lions cut the deficit down with three runs scored in the third on an RBI single from shortstop Nicolette Sinagra and a two-run double from second baseman Brenda Lee.
In the bottom of the third, sophomore third baseman
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) led off with a home run to left field and freshman catcher
Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) hit an RBI singled to center field to score sophomore shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.), who had reached with a double. Bright hit her sixth home run of the season to score two more runs that put the Pioneers ahead, 8-3.
The Pioneers added two more in the fourth on an RBI ground out from Havens and a passed ball that scored senior left fielder
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.).
Molloy scored its fourth run of the game in the top of the sixth when Lee blasted a shot over the left field wall.
C.W. Post closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth when Hagenah hit a rocket over the fence in left center that also scored Gonzalez.
Hagenah was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Bright finished the game batting 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Weber won her 16th game of the season by holding the Lions to four runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over six innings of work.
Kelley Jansen took the loss after surrendering nine earned runs on nine hits and two walks with five strikeouts over four innings.
In game two, the Lions scratched out a 1-0 lead in the second inning and held on for the win. Sinagra led off the inning and reached on a hit by pitch. She came around to score on an RBI single from right fielder Lauren Alexander.
The Pioneers outhit the Lions, 6-2, but could not match with a run in the game.
Megan Butterworth won the decision with a six hit shutout that included six strikeouts.
Freshman
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) held the Lions to one run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas for an 11 a.m. start.
Prior to the start of the game, the Pioneers honored their six graduating seniors:

Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia),
Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) Bright and Fisher. Kessel was presented with a citation of recognition by Leg. Delia DeRiggi-Whitton on behalf of Nassau County for her organizing of “Score for a Cure” to help bring awareness to Multiple Sclerosis.
