Softball Closes Out ECC Slate With Sweep Over St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-2 And 7-0

SPARKILL, N.Y. (April 21, 2012) – The C.W. Post softball team closed out its regular season conference schedule with a sweep over St. Thomas Aquinas College, 5-2 and 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.
 
C.W. Post improves to 36-18 overall and 24-4 in the ECC while St. Thomas Aquinas dips to 9-31 overall and 3-25 in conference play.
 
In the first game, the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI fielder's choice from junior first baseman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) and an RBI single from freshman centerfielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.).
 
The Spartans tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by designated player Megan Sweezy.
 
C.W. Post regained the lead in the fifth with three runs on a two-RBI single from Hopkins followed by an RBI single from senior right fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.).
 
Sophomore Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) won her 17th game of the season, scattering two runs on three hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts.
 
Freshman catcher Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the Pioneers in hits, batting 3-for-4 with a run scored.  Hopkins was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
 
Maura Power was charged with the loss after allowing five earned runs on 15 hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
 
In the second game, C.W. Post took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two base error.  The Pioneers scored three more runs in the top of the third, beginning with an RBI double from sophomore shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) that scored senior right fielder Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.). Hagenah came around to score on an infield error.  The third run was scored on an RBI single from Hopkins.
 
The Pioneers scored their sixth run in the fourth after Havens, who had reached base with a lead-off single, scored on an outfield fielding error. 
 
Dzierzynski plated the final run of the game in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Havens.
 
Freshman Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) pitched her third shutout of the year and held the Spartans to two hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
 
Havens was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Hagenah batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while senior second baseman Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) also batted 2-for-4 in the game.
 
Sweezy took the loss after surrendering two earned runs on seven hits in four innings of work.
 
C.W. Post will begin play in the East Coast Conference tournament on Thursday, where the Pioneers will play Dowling College.
