Softball Falls To Dowling In ECC First Round, 5-0

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (April 26, 2012) – Buoyed by five runs in the third inning that included a grand slam from designated player Deana Tortoricci, Dowling College won the first game of the East Coast Conference Softball Championship with a 5-0 win over C.W. Post Thursday afternoon at Dean Skelos Sports Complex.
Dowling, who will play the winner game two's Molloy College and Queens College on Friday at 11 a.m., improves its overall record to 29-16. C.W. Post slips to 36-19 and will face the loser of game two on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Dowling's inning in the third began with a leadoff single from center fielder Krystil Hofmann. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from left fielder Crystal Tarango. Right fielder Amber O'Malley followed with a ground rule double to left field that scored Hofmann. Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.). Catcher Emily Slack was issued a walk that loaded the bases and Tortoricci followed with a blast that cleared the left field fence to push the Golden Lion's lead to 5-0.
The Pioneers had a base runner on in each of the fifth and sixth innings but could not advance a run across the plate.
Dowling pitcher Jessie Stavola, who had 12 strikeouts in the game, enjoyed a 1-2-3 seventh inning with two strikeouts and a pop out.
O'Malley led the Golden Lions with two hits in the game. Stavola gave up three hits and two walks.
