Softball Picks Up A Pair Of Wins Against Bridgeport, 9-0 And 14-2

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (April 9, 2012) – C.W. Post extended its conference win streak to 11 games with a sweep over the University of Bridgeport, 9-0 and 14-2, Monday afternoon in an East Coast Conference doubleheader at DeLuca Field.
 
C.W. Post improves its overall record to 27-13 overall and 15-1 in the ECC.  Bridgeport slips to 11-22 overall and 4-14 in conference play.
 
In the early game, C.W. Post took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman center fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) reached base on a single and later scored on a wild pitch.  The Pioneers tallied another run in the second on a solo shot from sophomore designated player Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.).
 
In the third inning, sophomore third baseman Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) hit her fifth home run of the year with two outs and sophomore shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) followed with a triple and later came around to score on a passed ball.
 
The scoring continued for the Pioneers as they added three additional runs in the fourth, beginning with a lead-off homer from freshman pitcher Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.).  Gonzalez later drove in two more runs on a single.  C.W. Post increased its lead to 9-0 in the fifth on an RBI single from junior first baseman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) and an RBI single from senior Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.).
 
Salcido earned the win after pitching four complete and scoreless innings and surrendered just one hit and two walks while striking out four.  Freshman Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.) pitched the fifth and final inning and allowed no base runners while striking out one batter.
 
Gonzalez batted 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.  Hopkins was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
 
Tiffany Irrera was handed the loss after allowing six earned runs on 11 hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
 
In the nightcap, the Pioneers took a 10-0 lead through the first three innings on 10 hits, including a two RBI double from Gonzalez and a two RBI triple from Weber as part of a six-run campaign in the second inning.
 
Freshman catcher Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Weber hit back-to-back homers out of the ballpark in the fourth.  Sophomores Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) and Angela Carmine (Westbury, N.Y.) each hit RBI singles to cap the inning with four runs.
 
Weber earned her 12th win of the season after pitching the first three innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts.  Senior Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) pitched the final two innings and held the Purple Knights scoreless with just one hit and a walk.
 
Alitha Krolikowski was charged with the loss after surrendering five earned runs on eight hits through an inning and two thirds.
 
Weber batted 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored while senior right fielder Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Havens batted 2-for-4 with three runs.
 
C.W. Post returns to action on Tuesday, April 10 to face conference leader Molloy College at Skelos Field in Rockville Centre.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
