Dominican Defeats Softball In Extras, 4-2, At NCAA East Regional

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 4, 2012) – Catcher Ashley Corrao launched a two-run homer over the fence in  left field that lifted Dominican College to a 4-2 win over C.W. Post in the opening game of the NCAA Division II East Region Softball Championships Friday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
 
Dominican improves to 38-15 overall and will play Molloy College, who defeated Adelphi University, 2-0, in the second game, on Saturday at 11 a.m.  C.W. Post falls to 37-21 overall and will face Adelphi at 1:30 p.m.
 
The Chargers scratched out a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when pitcher Delaney Childers singled to left field to score shortstop Julie Plante from third.
 
The Pioneers answered with two runs on the same play, beginning with a run scored by freshman center fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) from third on a wild pitch.  Senior right fielder Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) reached third on the play and scored on an overthrow by the catcher that gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
 
Dominican tied the game in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice by center fielder Deidre Jeppson and the teams played scoreless through regulation innings to force extras.
 
The winning run was scored in the top of the 12th inning with two outs as Corrao came to the plate and blasted a 1-2 offering out of the park.
 
Plante batted 3-for-6 at the plate with a run scored to lead the Chargers in hits.  Childers allowed two runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out five batters.
 
Sophomore shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) batted 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Pioneers. Senior Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) was charged with the loss and allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.  Freshman Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) started in the circle and pitched four and a third innings, allowing one earned run on five hits.  Sophomore Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) came in relief and pitched four and two thirds scoreless innings, scattering two hits and two walks with one strikeout.
