Former Cross Country And Track Standout Maria Michta '08 Is Headed To The 2012 Summer Olympic Games In London
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (July 2, 2012) – Former LIU Post cross country and track and field standout Maria Michta '08 is headed to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London after she was the top finisher in the 20,000 meter racewalk at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore.
Michta, who is the first-ever LIU Post student-athlete to qualify for an Olympic team, crossed the finish line with a time of 1 hour, 34 minutes, 53.33 seconds, ahead of Miranda Melville from upstate Rush, N.Y., who finished second at 1:34:56.92.
A native of Nesconset, N.Y., Michta graduated from LIU Post in 2008 as the valedvictorian and is currently a doctoral candidate in microbiology, analyzing the hepatitis-C virus at Manhattan's Mount Sinai College of Medicine.
