Women's Soccer Wins Season Opener With 3-1 Victory Over AIC
Box Score LOWELL, Mass. (Aug. 31, 2012) – The LIU Post women's soccer team featured three different goal scorers as the Pioneers handed American International College a 3-1 loss on Friday afternoon at the River Hawk Soccer Classic.
The Pioneers win their season opener for the first time since 2009, when they posted a 4-0 victory against Bloomsburg. AIC opens the season 0-1.
Freshman forward
Hanna Westerling (Alvadalen, Sweden) gave the Pioneers an early lead over the Yellow Jackets as she took a through ball from senior midfielder
Jeanine Ambrogi (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and threaded a shot inside the right post at 2:16 into the contest.
The Pioneers added a second goal at 21:14, as junior forward
Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.) sent a cross to senior midfielder
Prudence Rydstrom (Islip, N.Y.), who settled the pass and put the ball into the left side of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Niciforo scored an unassisted goal at 61:33 to push the Pioneer lead to 3-0.
AIC got on the board and ended the shutout in the 86th minute as Alyssa Werbicki scored on an assist from Caroline Boyce.
Senior goalkeeper
Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) made 3 saves to earn the victory, while Samantha Tabak stopped 2 shots for AIC.
LIU Post continues action at the River Hawk Classic on Sunday, taking on host UMass-Lowell at 5 p.m.
